The Importance of Shower Filters
When we think of the importance of water filters in our homes, we immediately think of filters for our drinking water. However, it is important to understand that shower water also contains chemicals that can be equally detrimental to our health.
Why We Need Shower Filters
Shower water contains a vast amount of chemicals, including chlorine, chloramines, lead and fluoride, as well as bacteria which builds from the shower head itself. It is unwise to overlook the importance of shower water in comparison to drinking water as the skin is responsible for vital functions such as creating vitamin D. It also acts as a sponge, absorbing much of what it comes in contact with. That is why using proper showerhead filters is so vital. Chlorine, for example, is a chemical known for its astounding ability to disinfectant hard, tough surfaces. However, when coming in contact directly onto the skin, it disrupts the fragile balance of our skins bacteria, killing off good bacteria that are there to protect us. In fact, we absorb the same amount of bacteria, if not more, when we bathe in infected water as opposed to drinking it.
How Shower Filters Work
Shower filters are a fairly simple and cost-effective way to protect you and your family from harmful contaminants. Shower filters are available in an array of shapes and sizes, designed specifically to fit directly onto the showerhead. They all have the same objective, which is to filter out the presence of chemicals such as lead and hydrogen sulfide. Once installed, a difference can be felt immediately. Hair will feel softer and cleaner, and skin will feel much more supple. It will also increase your skin’s overall elasticity.
Types of Shower Filters
Carbon Filters: Carbon filters are excellent at removing chlorine, however they lose effectiveness in warm temperatures. In fact, the warmer the water the less effective they become. Due to this, carbon filters are recommended for use in drinking water filtration and for those who don’t take hot showers.
KDF Filters: These filters are composed of a mixture of copper and zinc which uses “redox” to clean the water of chemicals like iron, lead, chlorine and mercury. Comparable in price to carbon filters (both are very budget-friendly for families), they are also a powerful choice for removing chlorine, but lack the effectiveness in removing chloramines.
Vitamin C Filters: Effective at removing both chlorine and chloramines, Vitamin C filters cause a disruption that alters the balance of chlorine and chloramines, thus stripping them of their toxicity. It is no wonder that Vitamin C filters also affect the texture of the skin, leaving it soft and smooth. However, unlike the others listed, Vitamin C filters require cartridges to be replaced every few months. Whichever showerhead you choose, you can rest easier at night knowing that these water filters are drastically reducing chemical exposure. Not only will they keep you and your family safe from harmful toxins, but you’ll also notice the beneficial effects on your hair and on your skin too.
